JnanaJyothi, an additional education program, started in 2008 with support from Deshpande Foundation. The program started with 18 girls and has grown today to reach out to 100 girls from Kalghatgi and neighboring villages. Initially targeted at children of sex workers the program now welcomes girls belonging to poor families and migrant communities.
I like studying English and I take part in all the events at the program. I never had the chance to participate in any activity in regular school - Saraswathi, 12 years old
I am interested in computers and at the center I can finally practice on computers as much as I want - Reshma, 13 year old
At JnanaJyothi girls find a safe and stimulating learning environment to study English, Kannada and Math. Life skills and sex education are also part of the curriculum. The center is also equipped with a computer lab and IT training and practice represent a fundamental part of the program. In addition to this, girls are encouraged to organize celebrations for special events during which they can exhibit their talents acting, singing and dancing.
The experienced teaching staff at JnanaJyothi pays special attention to each child and fosters a happy learning environment using interactive activities and games. Moreover, the program provides opportunity for exposure visits and guets speaker sessions. Since inception BCT has observed how the program has improved girls' attendance and performance in school and has played a major role in boosting self confidence and leadership skills.
